These shrubs and vines are the most-loved in the West and are very resilient. They come in a wide variety of sizes and colors and are easy to maintain with proper care. They can be used in a water-conserving garden with careful attention to irrigation practices.

In contrast to other Camellias, this broad-leaved evergreen shrub has small foliage and a more open habit. Its long shoots are easily trained on a wall or fence. Flowering occurs in the fall to early winter, and produces single to fully double blossoms.
There should be an incorporation of organic material into any whole planting bed.

Another reliable bloomer on and off thru the year. Provides wonderful golden flowers, and benefits from deep, infrequent watering and some pruning. Butterfly attractor. Forms dark green mound 18" by 3'. May suffer some frost damage but will recover quickly. Very root hardy. Susceptible to whiteflies.

Practice grass-cycling by leaving short grass clippings on lawns after mowing, so that nutrients and organic matter are returned to the soil.
Mulching and adding compost to soil can minimize evaporation and help soil absorb and store water.
